Top 10 Cities for UK Expats
Australia continues to reign supreme as the expat destination du jour. Four of its cities fall within the top 10 cities globally for UK expats to move to.
MoveHub, which helps people move internationally, saw the number of Australian cities in its top 10 UK expat routes double from 2012 to 2013.
Top Cities for UK Expats in 2013
New York’s fall from grace was dramatic. In 2012 it was the second most popular destination for UK expats, in 2013, it didn’t even make the top ten. Hong Kong didn’t fare much better again dropping from fourth most popular to off the top ten.
MoveHub spokesperson Max Holloway said: “It is estimated that at any one time 16% of the world’s population wants to move to another country. Most of the expats we deal with are business people and their families. Australia’s growing resources and services sector means more and more people are looking to move there for work from the UK.”
The spokesperson added while Australian cities were expected to remain popular for 2014, he expected to see Sao Paulo sneak in or near the top ten, along with Doha and Oman.
He said: “As Brazil’s economy continues to grow, so do the number of people moving there to take advantage. Many expats head to Sao Paulo as it is the financial and economic hub of Brazil so we see it as being somewhere that will definitely have a lot more movement in 2014.
MoveHub’s 2014 predictions
“We don’t really know why people seemed less interested in moving to New York and Hong Kong, but it may well be to do with increasing property prices. Non-residents in Hong Kong have to pay a staggering 25 percent of the property’s price on top of the deal value and New York isn’t exactly known for its cheap property prices.”
