Shipping Container Costs to Peru
Thinking of moving to Peru? The South American nation is a fascinating place to live, bursting with vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes. There’s coastline, mountains, and rainforest in abundance, spread across a country marked by ancient history. Over 32 million people live in Peru, with the majority of them residing in cities such as Lima, Arequipa, and Cusco. Here’s what you need to know about shipping to Peru.Sea freight or air freight?
Shipping your belongings to Peru is easy – you just need to choose between air freight and sea freight.Air freight is the faster option; sending your stuff by plane to Peru will most likely take about two to three days. However, air freight is also rather expensive, so it’s not advisable unless you’re moving in a rush.
Sea freight is significantly cheaper, generally costing about five times less than air freight, which makes it ideal for people who are moving on a budget. Container ships are slow and will usually take several weeks to reach their destination, so it’s important that you plan well in advance.
In the case of sea freight, your belongings will be shipped in either a 20ft container or a 40ft container. If the total volume of your cargo is no more than around 15 cubic metres, you will share the use of a container with other people (in a process known as Less Than Container Load, or LCL).
Most of our suppliers offer a full door-to-door service, meaning they’ll take care of everything – all the way from your old home to your new one.
Major shipping ports
The biggest container terminal in Peru is the Port of Callao, situated in Lima, halfway down the country’s Pacific coastline. There’s also the Port of Matarani, Peru’s second busiest port, located at the country’s southern end. Once your shipment reaches Peruvian soil, it will pass through customs, before travelling by truck and/or train to your new home.Clearing customs in Peru
The customs process can seem complicated, but your shipping company will assist you through every stage. You need to create an inventory (i.e. a packing list) of everything you’re bringing into Peru, being as specific and detailed as possible. All household goods and personal effects are subject to tax and customs duty (around 12-30%), unless the items have been previously exported from Peru. Every shipment will be physically inspected by a customs official, so make sure you don’t bring anything that’s restricted or prohibited (see below).
