Shipping Container Costs to Sweden
Welcome to the home of everything beautiful. Sweden is a land of stunning landscapes, elegant cities and world famous furniture. Sandwiched between Norway and Finland in the north of Europe, Sweden is the heart of Scandinavia. The Swedes enjoy an excellent standard of living, which is why their country has become so popular with expats from around the world. Sweden is 1,325 miles long and has only ten million people, making it one of the most sparsely populated European nations. So there’s more than enough room for newbies like you. In the north of the country you’ll find vast mountains and river valleys, while in the south there are the uber cool cities of Stockholm, Malmo and Gothenburg. Before you can start your new life in Sweden, there are a few practical things you need to know about first.Different shipping options
If you’re planning on relocating permanently to Sweden, it’s likely you’ve got a few belongings you want to bring with you. There are two ways you can do this: sea freight or air freight.Air freight is speedy but expensive. A cargo plane will get your furniture to Sweden from anywhere in the world in just one or two days, but it comes at a much higher cost than ocean shipping.
Sea freight is slower but also more affordable. Unless your move is very last-minute, we recommend you choose sea freight. Depending on how much stuff you want to bring, you will use either a 20ft container or a 40ft container. If you don’t have much cargo (ie. less than about 20 cubic metres), you will most likely share the use of a container with other people. This is called Less Than Container Load, or LCL. Most of our shipping suppliers offer a full door-to-door service, which comes at a higher price than port-to-port but it’s much more convenient.
Major shipping routes
The largest container port in Sweden (and the whole of Scandinavia) is Gothenburg, located on the west coast of the country. It handles about 60% of Sweden’s container traffic and it’s big enough to deal with the largest container ships in the world. There are 70 freight trains going out of Gothenburg each day, capable of reaching about 70% of Sweden’s population within five hours. If you’re moving to Stockholm, your container will most likely go to the Port of Gävle. This is Sweden’s second largest container terminal, located just two hours from the capital city. The Port of Gävle has some huge investment plans for the future, so things are only going to get bigger and better over there. Whether its Gothenburg, Gävle or somewhere else, your belongings will be in safe and experienced hands.Sweden customs
Before your container can be delivered to your new home in Sweden (either by train or truck), it needs to get past customs. It sounds like a scary process, but it’s actually very simple and your shipping company will help you through it. Most importantly, you need to create an inventory and declare everything you’re bringing into Sweden. Be as clear and specific as possible - it’s no good writing words like “misc” and “packed by owner”. If customs officials aren’t satisfied, they have the right to open your container and physically inspect it. This will slow the process down and incur various waiting fees. If you’re moving from within the EU then you don’t have to pay any customs duties on your belongings. If you’re moving from outside the EU, you can still avoid paying customs duties on your household goods if they a) have been used for at least one year and b) are intended to be used again in your new residence in Sweden. See below for an idea of the items that are prohibited or restricted by Swedish customs. If you need more information, check out their official website.Shipping Container Options
