Shipping Container Costs to Russia

Fancy starting a new life in the Motherland? Russia is an enchanting place of vast proportions; it measures more than 17 million km², easily ranking as the largest country on Earth. It stretches from Europe and across the entire Asian continent, encompassing beautiful cities (such as Moscow and St Petersburg) and stunning landscapes (such as the Altai Mountains and Lake Baikal). There are over 140 million people living in Russia, but the majority of them reside in the very western parts of the country.

Sea freight or air freight?

There are two ways you can ship your belongings to Russia: air freight or sea freight. For people moving in a rush, air freight is best. Most cargo planes can travel to Russia from anywhere in the world in only two or three days. However, air freight is also very expensive, so it’s best avoided if you’re moving on a budget. On the other hand, sea freight is significantly cheaper, normally costing about five times less than air freight. While the service is more affordable, it’s also much slower, so it’s important that you plan your move well in advance. If you do opt for sea freight, one of our suppliers will ship your belongings in either a 20ft or a 40ft container. For smaller volumes of cargo (15 cubic metres or less) there is a process called Less Than Container Load (LCL), in which several people share the use of one container. Most of our suppliers offer a door-to-door service, meaning they’ll look after every part of the process – all the way from your old home to your new one.

Major shipping ports

There are two major container terminals if you’re approaching Russia from the west: the Port of St. Petersburg (northwest on the Baltic Sea) and the Port of Novorossiysk (southwest on the Black Sea). Meanwhile, if you’re moving to Russia from the east, there’s the Port of Vladivostok (southeast on the Pacific Coast). Once your container has reached Russian soil, it will pass through customs and travel by truck and/or train to your new home.

Clearing customs in Russia

Papers please! Any country’s customs process can seem fairly daunting, but our experienced shipping suppliers will assist you. You are required to create an inventory (i.e. a packing list) of everything you’re bringing into Russia, being as clear and specific as possible. Unless you’re a diplomat, all of your household goods and personal effects are subject to customs duty, which is around 30% of the shipment’s value (assessed by a customs official). Your shipment will be physically inspected, so make sure you don’t bring anything that’s restricted or prohibited (see below for more information). Check out the Russian customs official website to find out more.
