Shipping Container Costs to Austria
Thinking of a new life in the mountains? The landlocked European nation of Austria is a real magnet for expats, combining quaint villages and uplifting Alpine scenery with trendy cities like Vienna and Graz. Plus, it’s home to around 8.8 million people, which makes it fairly quiet by European standards. There’s skiing in the winter, hiking in the summer, and delicious food all year round – think hot wiener schnitzels and crispy apple strudel. Here’s what you need to know about shipping your belongings to Austria.Sea freight or air freight?
There are two main shipping options to choose between: air freight or sea freight.Air freight offers a fast service. Cargo planes are able to reach Austria from anywhere in the world in just two or three days. However, air freight is expensive – it’s handy if you need to move abroad quickly, but not great for keeping costs low.
Sea freight is the slower option but it’s also much more affordable, being around five times cheaper than air freight. If you’re moving on a budget, sea freight is ideal, but you also need to allow several weeks for your cargo to arrive.
If you choose sea freight, your belongings will go in either a 20ft container or a 40ft container, depending on the amount of stuff you’re bringing. If the total volume of your cargo is less than around 15 cubic metres, you will share a container with other people (in a process known as Less Than Container Load, or LCL).
Most of our shipping suppliers provide a full door-to-door service, which means they’ll take your belongings all the way from your old home to your new one in Austria. Easy!
Major shipping ports
Since Austria is a landlocked country, most containers must be shipped to other European countries and then transported onwards to Austria, either by freight train or along the River Danube to the Port of Vienna. Popular destination ports include Genoa (Italy), Antwerp (Belgium), and Hamburg (Germany). Once your shipment reaches Austria, it will need to clear customs before it can travel to your new home.Clearing customs in Austria
The customs process is not as complicated as it seems, and our professional shipping suppliers will help you through every stage. You’ll need to create an inventory (i.e. a packing list) of all the items you’re bringing into Austria, making sure you declare everything. It’s wise to know about this requirement before you start loading a container. If you’re coming from within the EU, your shipment can enter Austria duty free. However, if you’re moving from a non-EU country, your household goods must meet certain conditions in order to qualify for duty exemption. They must be a) used, b) owned for at least six months, and c) intended for continued use in Austria (i.e. not for resale).
See below for an idea of the items that are restricted or prohibited by Austrian customs, and be aware that some shipments are physically inspected. For more information, take a look at the Austrian customs official website.
