Shipping Container Costs to Denmark

Denmark is the land of the happy; in 2018’s World Happiness Report, the country ranked an impressive third. The Danes have more than enough reasons to be cheerful, blessed with an excellent standard of living, great healthcare, and loads of renewable energy. Denmark is also the best country in the world when it comes to work-life balance (according to TotallyMoney), so stress isn’t really a thing over there. Instead, their big thing is hygge, that “feeling of cosiness and warmth” that we all crave in the cold winter months. The northern European country is extremely flat and low, made up of over 440 islands - the biggest being Zealand, where you’ll find the cool capital city of Copenhagen. Denmark is famous for loads of great things, including Lego, medieval castles, the Little Mermaid and of course all the amazing seafood. Before you start your new life as a Dane, there are a few practical things you need to know about.

Different shipping options

If you’re thinking of moving permanently to Denmark, you’ve probably got some furniture that you want to bring with you. In the world of international shipping, there are two main options: air freight and sea freight.

Air freight is fast but expensive. Most planes will take your stuff to Denmark from anywhere in the world in just one or two days. Shipping by air is helpful for last-minute moves but it’s best avoided if you’re working to a budget.

Sea freight isn’t as quick but it’ll save you a lot more money. Container ships are naturally much slower than cargo planes, having to chug around the countries rather than flying straight over them. We recommend choosing sea freight, as long as you start planning your international move well in advance. Depending on the amount of cargo being shipped, you’ll use either a 20ft container or a 40ft container. If you’re bringing a particularly small amount (usually less than 15 cubic metres), it will go as a part of a groupage shipment (known as LCL, or Less Than Container Load), where you share the use of a container with other people. Most of our suppliers offer a full door-to-door service, which is more expensive than port-to-port but much more convenient.

Major shipping routes

With sea on three sides, Denmark’s got a huge number of ports. The country’s largest container terminal is the Port of Aarhus (dealing with 60% of Denmark’s container trade), situated on the east coast of the mainland. It’s got a super central location, which makes it very accessible for lots of Danish cities. However, if you’re moving to Copenhagen then your container will be sailing to the Port of Copenhagen. Other major container terminals include the Port of Fredericia (on the mainland’s east coast) and the Port of Aalborg (a river port in the north). Once your container arrives in Denmark, it will then go to your new home either by truck or train.

Denmark customs

The final hurdle! Before your container can leave the port in Denmark, it needs to get through customs. This sounds a bit scary but it’s a fairly easy process, and your shipping company can help you with it. Just follow the rules and there won’t be any problems. Most importantly, you need to create an inventory that lists everything you’re taking into the country. Make sure it’s very detailed and specific. Most ports in Denmark will scan containers electronically, but customs officials have the right to undertake a physical inspection if they’re feeling suspicious. Anybody moving from within the EU is able to ship their household goods into Denmark without paying any customs duties. However, non-EU movers can avoid customs duties as long as they meet certain conditions: namely that their household goods are used, at least six months old and intended to be used in the same way in Denmark. See below for an idea of restricted  items, and feel free to check out the official Denmark customs website for more information.
