Shipping Container Costs to Colombia
Thinking of adding some Latin American joy to your life? Colombia should do the trick. Situated in northwest South America, the Spanish-speaking nation is a land of megadiverse wildlife, Amazonian rainforest, ancient ruins, sensational coffee, and two beautiful coastlines. Plus, Colombia’s home to nearly 50 million people, so it’s certainly not short on atmosphere.Sea freight or air freight?
Most international relocations involve shipping a few belongings. If you’re moving to Colombia, you’ll probably have some stuff you’d like to bring with you. There are two main options: air freight or sea freight.Air freight offers a quick service; cargo planes can reach Colombia from almost anywhere in the world in just 2-3 days. This is obviously very handy if you need to make a last-minute move. However, air freight is also very expensive, so it isn’t ideal for people who are moving on a budget.
Sea freight is much more affordable, typically costing around five times less than air freight. Container ships are slow and can take several weeks to reach their destination, but plan your move well in advance and this won’t be a problem.
If you choose sea freight, you will use either a 20ft container or a 40ft container. However, you don’t need to fill the whole container; if the total volume of your cargo is around 15 cubic metres or less, you will share the use of a container with other people in a process known as Less Than Container Load (LCL). Most of our shipping suppliers provide a full door-to-door service, which means they’ll take your things all the way from your old house to your new one.
Major shipping ports
Colombia has always enjoyed a healthy dose of coastline, so the port options are plentiful. The two key container terminals on its Caribbean coastline are the Port of Cartagena and the Port of Barranquilla, which are handy if you’re arriving from the east of Colombia. Meanwhile, the Port of Buenaventura is the best option if you’re shipping to the country’s Pacific coastline. Once your container has passed through customs, it will travel by truck and/or train to your new home.Clearing customs in Colombia
The final hurdle is getting your container through Colombian customs, but your shipping company will help you with that. You are expected to create a typewritten inventory (in Spanish) of everything you’re bringing into Colombia, describing the contents of your container in detail (including brands and serial numbers). All shipments are physically inspected, so make sure your inventory is accurate and truthful.Unfortunately, all shipments into Colombia have to pay customs duties and taxes (although the rates vary widely). After the physical inspection is complete, it’s the Customs Inspector who decides the value of each of your household goods. See below for an idea of what’s prohibited or restricted by Colombian customs.
