Shipping Container Costs to Egypt
Thinking of starting a new life in the Land of the Pharaohs? Situated in northeast Africa, Egypt is an enchanting country, home to the mighty River Nile, vast swathes of Sahara Desert, and a serious amount of ancient history. Over 100 million people live there, around half of whom reside in major cities such as Cairo, Alexandria, and Giza. Here’s what you need to know about shipping your belongings to Egypt.Sea freight or air freight?
If you’re moving to Egypt, there are two main shipping options to choose between: air freight or sea freight. For fast delivery, air freight is best. Cargo planes will typically take two or three days to reach Egypt from anywhere in the world, so it’s helpful if you’re moving in a hurry. Air freight is also very expensive, but fortunately, there is a cheaper alternative available.
Sea freight generally costs around five times less than air freight, so it’s a much more affordable option for international movers. Container ships are slower than cargo planes, taking several weeks to reach their destination, but plan your move well in advance and this won’t be a problem.
If you opt for sea freight, your belongings will be shipped in either a 20ft container or a 40ft container. There’s no obligation to fill a whole container; if the total volume of your cargo is no more than about 15 cubic metres, you will share the use of a container with other people (in a process called Less Than Container Load, or LCL).
The majority of our shipping suppliers also offer professional packing and unpacking services, insurance cover, and full door-to-door delivery. These optional extras come with additional fees, but they are well worth it.
Major shipping ports
Ever since the carving of the Suez Canal back in the 19th century, Egypt has been a major hub of international shipping. The country’s biggest container terminal is the Port of Alexandria, situated on the Mediterranean Sea about 220 km from Cairo, although there are numerous ports located along Egypt’s northern and eastern coastlines. Once your shipment reaches Egyptian soil, it will pass through customs, and travel by truck and/or train to your new home.Clearing customs in Egypt
The customs process can sound a bit daunting, but it’s fairly straightforward, and your shipping company will guide you through the process. You are required to create an inventory (i.e. a packing list) of everything you’re bringing into Egypt, being as specific and detailed as possible. This is helpful to know before you start packing your things and loading your container. All household goods are subject to customs duty and tax (excluding books and clothes), unless you’re moving as a diplomat. Additionally, all your items must be used and intended for future personal use, rather than commercial resale. Every shipment is physically inspected, so make sure you don’t bring anything that’s restricted or prohibited (see below).
