Shipping Container Costs to Mexico

Mexico is a land of bright colours and ancient history. Located between the United States and Central America, the Spanish-speaking nation is home to around 125 million people. Mexicans place great importance on family, food and fiestas, and it’s this lifestyle that has attracted so many expats from around the world. The busy capital, Mexico City, is an exciting place to live, but there is variety and beauty across the whole country. Here’s all you need to know about shipping your stuff there.

Different shipping options

If you’re thinking of moving to Mexico then you’ve probably got some furniture that needs to move with you. However, you need to decide how you’re going to get your stuff down there. International shipping comes in two forms: air freight and sea freight.

Air freight gets the job done quickly. Cargo planes offer a speedy service that will take just two or three days from almost anywhere around the world. Unfortunately, air freight is also the much more expensive option, so it’s helpful for last-minute moves but not ideal if you’re trying to keep costs down.

Sea freight is significantly slower and it will take at least several weeks, but it’s generally about five times cheaper than air freight. As long as you plan your move well in advance, you can choose sea freight without worrying about the time it takes. Container ships also have a much better carbon footprint than cargo planes, so you’ll be doing the world a favour, too.

If you do go for sea freight, your belongings will travel in either a 20ft container or a 40ft container. You don’t need to worry about filling the whole container; if the total volume of your cargo is less than about 15 cubic metres, you can share the use of a container with other people. This is called Less Than Container Load, or LCL. The majority of our shipping suppliers provide a door-to-door service, which means they’ll collect your belongings from your old home and bring them all the way to your new one.

Major shipping routes

Mexico’s two largest container terminals, the Port of Manzanillo and the Port of Lazaro Cárdenas, are both located along the country’s west coast (i.e. on the Pacific Ocean). However, these won’t be much use to you if you’re coming from Europe. Instead, your container will most likely ship to the Port of Veracruz or the Port of Altamira, two large terminals situated along the east coast and facing the Atlantic Ocean. Once your shipment reaches Mexican soil, it will pass through customs and then go by truck and/or train to your new residence.

Clearing customs in Mexico

Clearing customs is easier than it sounds, and your shipping company will help you through the whole process. You need to prepare an inventory (i.e. a list) of everything that you’re bringing into Mexico, describing everything as accurately as possible. Some shipments are subject to physical inspections, so it’s important that your inventory matches up with everything inside your container. See below for an idea of the items that are restricted or prohibited by Mexican customs.

You are allowed to bring your household goods and personal effects into Mexico duty-free, as long as all the items are a) used, b) at least six months old, c) not intended for resale, and d) imported no more than six months after your arrival in Mexico. Check out the Mexico customs’ official website for more information.
