Shipping Container Costs to Oman
For a hearty dose of desert, mountains, and lush coastline, look no further than Oman. The West Asian country is a sizzling land of natural beauty, located on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. There are almost 5 million people living in Oman, almost 2 million of whom live in the capital city of Muscat. With forts full of history, cities full of Islamic architecture, and beaches full of wild turtles, there’s more than enough to keep you busy in Oman. Here’s what you need to know about shipping your stuff there.Sea freight or air freight?
If you’re thinking of relocating permanently to Oman, you’ll probably want to bring a few belongings with you. There are two main options to choose between: air freight or sea freight.Air freight offers a fast service. Cargo planes are able to reach Oman from anywhere in the world in just two or three days. However, air freight is expensive – it’s handy if you need to move abroad quickly, but not great for keeping costs low.
Sea freight is the slower option but it’s also much more affordable, being around five times cheaper than air freight. If you’re moving on a budget, sea freight is ideal, but you also need to allow several weeks for your cargo to arrive.
If you choose sea freight, your belongings will go in either a 20ft container or a 40ft container, depending on the amount of stuff you’re bringing. If the total volume of your cargo is less than around 15 cubic metres, you will share a container with other people (in a process known as Less Than Container Load, or LCL).
Most of our shipping suppliers provide a full door-to-door service, which means they’ll take your belongings all the way from your old home to your new one in Oman. Easy!
Major shipping ports
The biggest container terminal in Oman is the Port of Salalah, situated in the southwest of the country on the Arabian Sea. This is most likely where your shipment will be delivered to, especially considering the Port of Sultan Qaboos (in Muscat) recently went non-commercial. Once your container reaches Omani soil, it will need to pass through customs before travelling by truck and/or train to your new home.Clearing customs in Oman
All of our experienced shipping suppliers are here to help you through the Omani customs process. You need to create an inventory (i.e. a packing list) of all the belongings you’re bringing into Oman, making sure you declare everything in detail. It’s helpful to know about the inventory requirements before you start packing. You are allowed to bring your household goods and personal effects into Oman duty free, as long as you’ve owned and used the items for at least 6 months prior to your move. Ocean shipments take between 5-9 working days to clear, and every shipment is physically inspected. See below for an idea of what you can’t bring into Oman, and check out Oman’s official customs website for more information.
