Shipping Container Costs to Poland
Fancy a new life in Central Europe? You can’t get much more central than Poland. Bordered by no less than seven European countries, Polska is right in the thick of it. There are over 38 million people living there, blessed with exciting, up-and-coming cities (e.g. Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk), and sensational natural beauty (e.g. the Carpathian Mountains and the Great Masurian Lakes). Here’s what you need to know about shipping your belongings to Poland.Sea freight or air freight?
If you’re thinking of moving to Poland, your two main shipping options are air freight or sea freight.Air freight offers a fast service. Cargo planes are able to reach Poland from anywhere in the world in just two or three days. However, air freight is expensive – it’s handy if you need to move abroad quickly, but not great for keeping costs low.
Sea freight is the slower option but it’s also much more affordable, being around five times cheaper than air freight. If you’re moving on a budget, sea freight is ideal, but you also need to allow several weeks for your cargo to arrive.
If you choose sea freight, your belongings will go in either a 20ft container or a 40ft container, depending on the amount of stuff you’re bringing. If the total volume of your cargo is less than around 15 cubic metres, you will share a container with other people (in a process known as Less Than Container Load, or LCL). Most of our shipping suppliers provide a full door-to-door service, which means they’ll take your belongings all the way from your old home to your new one in Poland. Easy!
Major shipping ports
The biggest container terminal in Poland is the Port of Gdansk, situated at the eastern end of the country’s single, northern coastline (on the Baltic Sea). If you’re coming from Western Europe or the USA, it might be quicker to have your shipment delivered to the Port of Hamburg in Germany, before sending it over land into Poland. Once your shipment has cleared Polish customs, it will be taken by truck and/or train to your new home.Clearing customs in Poland
The customs process is not as complicated as it seems, and our professional shipping suppliers will help you through every stage. You’ll need to create an inventory (i.e. a packing list) of all the items you’re bringing into Poland, making sure you declare everything. It’s wise to know about this requirement before you start loading a container. If you’re coming from within the EU, your shipment can enter Poland duty free. However, if you’re moving from a non-EU country, your household goods must meet certain conditions in order to qualify for duty exemption. They must be a) used, b) owned for at least six months, and c) intended for continued use in Poland (i.e. not for resale).
See below for an idea of the items that are restricted or prohibited by Polish customs, and be aware that some shipments are physically inspected. For more information, take a look at the Polish customs official website.
