Shipping Container Costs to Cyprus
Cyprus is where the cultures of Europe and the Middle East meet. This pan-shaped island, sitting a few miles south of Turkey, is the best of Mediterranean beauty. Its subtropical climate, stunning landscape and laid-back cities have charmed visitors for centuries. The island is divided into two sections - Greek and Turkish - which means the lifestyles there are extremely diverse. Walk from the southern end to the northern tip and you’ll see many things change, such as the architecture and the food. However, there are some gorgeous, traditional Cypriot foods that you can get anywhere on the island, including halloumi cheese and souvla. If you’re thinking of moving to Cyprus, there is some practical stuff that you need to know first.Different shipping options
Moving belongings overseas can be done in one of two ways: by air or by sea. Sending your cargo via plane is quick but also quite expensive, while container ships are slower but comparatively cheaper. We really recommend that you go for ocean shipping, as it’s much better value for money and you can fit a lot more in a container. It just requires a bit of advanced planning. If you’re opting for ocean shipping, you also need to decide whether you’ll be sharing a container with other people or using one entirely to yourself. This is based on how much stuff you’re bringing, and you can read more about LCL and FCL here. Most of our suppliers should offer a full door-to-door service, but make sure you check with them before you agree any terms.Major shipping routes
As an island nation, it isn’t surprising that Cyprus has a lot of sea ports, but there are only two that can handle container ships. The largest port is in Limassol, which is located at the southern end of the island. The port has two terminals and it deals with the majority of the cargo going in and out of the country. Then there is the Port of Larnaca, located in the southeast, which actually deals mainly with vegetables but also takes in its fair share of containers. If you’re shipping your belongings to Cyprus then they will be heading to one of these two ports.Cypriot customs
Before you can start your new life in Cyprus, you’ll need to get your cargo through customs. All shipments coming from outside Europe are inspected once they arrive on the island, while European shipments are only subject to random inspection. Make sure you declare everything that you’re bringing into the country and don’t try to sneak in anything that isn’t allowed (see below). There are a few unexpected items that Cypriot customs prohibit or restrict, such as wireless phones, walkie talkies and sports equipment. Check out the Cyprus Customs & Excise Department website for more information.
