Shipping Container Costs to Indonesia
If you like islands, Indonesia will be perfect for you – it has more than 17,000 of them, and they’re spread across a huge area. Indonesia is the largest country in Southeast Asia, bursting with volcanic beauty, diverse wildlife, and nearly 270 million people. From tropical paradises and peaceful temples to the hectic capital city of Jakarta, Indonesia offers tranquility and excitement in equal measure. Here’s what you need to know about shipping your belongings there, and check out our guide to Indonesia's healthcare system too.Sea freight or air freight?
Firstly, you need to choose between air freight or sea freight. Air freight offers a quick service; cargo planes can reach Indonesia from almost anywhere in the world in just 2-3 days. This is handy if you need to make a last-minute move, but air freight is also very expensive, so it isn’t ideal if you’re moving on a budget. Sea freight is much more affordable, typically costing around five times less than air freight. Container ships are slow and can take several weeks to reach their destination, but plan your move well in advance and this won’t be a problem. If you choose sea freight, you will use either a 20ft container or a 40ft container. However, you don’t need to fill the whole container; if the total volume of your cargo is around 15 cubic metres or less, you will share the use of a container with other people in a process known as Less Than Container Load (LCL). Most of our shipping suppliers provide a full door-to-door service, which means they’ll take your belongings all the way from your old house to your new one.Major shipping ports
The biggest container terminal in Indonesia is Tanjung Priok in Jakarta, which is handy if you’re moving to the capital, or indeed anywhere else on the island of Java. Meanwhile, the major ports on the other islands are Belawan (Sumatra), Makassar (Sulawesi), and Sorong (Papua). Once your container reaches Indonesian soil, it will pass through customs, and travel by truck and/or train to your new home.Clearing customs in Indonesia
It’s important to be clued up on all the Indonesian customs requirements (our experienced shipping suppliers will help you). For example, you need to create an inventory (i.e. a packing list) of all the belongings you’re bringing into Indonesia, making sure you declare everything. You’re allowed to bring your household goods and personal effects into Indonesia duty-free, but you must have used these items for at least one year prior to your move. Sea shipments take 10-15 days to clear, and be aware that all shipments are physically inspected. See below for an idea of the items that are restricted or prohibited by Indonesian customs.Shipping Container Options
