Shipping Container Costs to Greece
Greece is a tasty cultural cocktail, mixing together the traditions of Western Europe, the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and Turkey in one delightful blend. This combination has attracted tourists and expats for centuries, promising a world of stunning landscapes, gorgeous weather, and sensational food. There are over 11 million people in Greece, and around one third of them live in the capital city of Athens. With more than 2,000 islands to explore, Greece’s scattered beauty will never lose its magic.Sea freight or air freight?
If you’re thinking of relocating permanently to Greece, you’ll probably want to bring a few belongings with you. There are two main options to choose between: air freight or sea freight. Air freight offers a fast service. Cargo planes are able to reach Greece from anywhere in the world in just two or three days. However, air freight is expensive – it’s handy if you need to move abroad quickly, but not great for keeping costs low. Sea freight is the slower option but it’s also much more affordable, being around five times cheaper than air freight. If you’re moving on a budget, sea freight is ideal, but you also need to allow several weeks for your cargo to arrive. If you choose sea freight, your belongings will go in either a 20ft container or a 40ft container, depending on the amount of stuff you’re bringing. If the total volume of your cargo is less than around 15 cubic metres, you will share a container with other people (in a process known as Less Than Container Load, or LCL). Most of our shipping suppliers provide a full door-to-door service, which means they’ll take your belongings all the way from your old home to your new one in Greece. Easy!Major shipping ports
The biggest container terminal in Greece (and the seventh largest in Europe) is the Port of Piraeus, which is located just west of Athens on the Mediterranean Sea. The port has served the capital city since ancient times, so it’s not short on experience. There’s also the Port of Thessaloniki, situated on the Aegean Sea and operating as the country’s second largest container terminal. Once your shipment has passed through customs at Piraeus or Thessaloniki, it will go by truck and/or train to your new Greek home.Clearing customs in Greece
The customs process can seem quite complicated, but our shipping suppliers will assist you all the way. You are required to create an inventory (i.e. a detailed list) of everything you intend to bring into Greece, being as clear and accurate as possible. Customs officials may physically inspect your container, so it’s very important that your inventory is truthful. If you’re moving from another EU country then you can bring your belongings into Greece duty-free, but any shipment coming from outside the EU may be subject to certain duties and taxes (such as VAT). See below for an idea of the items that are restricted or prohibited by Greece customs.Shipping Container Options
